Less windshield time
Two small campsite shifts fix most of the long days.
Wheel time is spread across scenic stops rather than continuous driving. These changes preserve the core route; Aug 8 remains long because the confirmed Sól table pulls the trip to Hafnarfjörður.
Drive one extra easy hour after the Akureyri grocery stop. The next morning starts inside Tröllaskagi, with the same Siglufjörður and coastal stops.
Kolugljúfur is now an optional branch. Skip it by default and protect the early Kirkjufell arrival; no major attraction is removed.
Only when the glacier day finishes on time: visit Vestrahorn that evening and continue to Bragðavellir. This adds about 1h15 to the shorter glacier day and removes it from the East Fjords transfer.
The confirmed 18:00 Sól table creates the long finish. Reducing wheel time further means dropping a protected Snæfellsnes highlight or changing the reservation; keep the 14:30 hard departure instead.

Reynisfjara black sand beach
Already on Day 3
Do not cut this for Kvernufoss. If access remains viewpoint-only, use the designated viewpoint and Dyrhólaey coastal overlook—never improvise beach access.
Live status on Jul 23: SafeTravel reported hazardous surf and viewpoint-only access. Recheck the same morning and obey the lights and officers.02
Vestrahorn / Stokksnes
Batman Mountain
Yes—keep it. This is the jagged Batman-shaped mountain, black dunes and reflection foreground. It is different enough from Reynisfjara to justify both.
1,100 ISK per adult (4,400 ISK for four). Any car can use the gravel access in ordinary conditions; the self-service kiosk operates before the café opens at 09:00.03
Puffins
Dyrhólaey → Hafnarhólmi backup
Start at Dyrhólaey Lágey: it costs no route detour. If there is no sighting and puffins remain a top goal, replace Seyðisfjörður with Hafnarhólmi—do not stack both East Fjords branches.
Hafnarhólmi hosts puffins from mid-April to mid-August and is the stronger unguided fallback, but adds about 140 km / 2–2.5 hours from Egilsstaðir. Stay on marked paths and never approach burrows.04
Glymur waterfall
Replaces the easy Reykjavík morning
It fits before Blue Lagoon only with the 06:30 departure and an 11:30 hard exit. Expect 7 km, 3–4 hours, about 400 m of ascent, steep terrain and river crossings.
No official live source confirms the seasonal log is installed. Check locally and turn around if the log is absent, water is high, weather is poor or anyone is uncomfortable with heights.05
Volcano landscape
Kerið + Lava Show + optional Leirhnjúkur
There is no active eruption confirmed in the latest official update. Magma accumulation continues under Svartsengi, so the situation can change with short warning. For a predictable outdoor experience, choose Leirhnjúkur over Fagradalsfjall.
Never enter a closed zone or walk on fresh lava. Recheck IMO, SafeTravel, roads and Blue Lagoon operations shortly before Aug 9 and again that day.Camp strategy

Do not plan around visible lava. Activity and access can change with little notice. Never enter closed areas or walk on fresh lava; treat SafeTravel, roads, air quality and the Icelandic Met Office as the day-of authority.
